About the Claddagh Ring Symbol:

The Irish Claddagh Promise ring dates back to the 17th Century in Ireland. It is named after the fishing of Claddagh, which was just outside Galway, Ireland. The Claddagh symbol contains hands holding a heart which is adorned with a crown in most versions. It is said the hands represent friendship, the heart represents love, and the crown represents loyalty.

There are a couple interesting legends associated with the origin of the Irish Claddagh ring. One credits silversmith Richard Joyce with creating it. According to Wikipedia, Richard Joyce learned how to make the Claddagh design when he was enslaved in Algeria.

The Claddagh ring can be used as all kinds of different purposes – as a promise ring, an engagement ring, or even a wedding ring, or just for decoration. When it is worn to represent a relationship, it can take on different meanings depending on which hand it is worn, and in which direction it is pointing. How it is worn can be an indicator of relationship status of the wearer.

1. If it is worn on the right hand, pointed away, it means you are single and may be looking for love.

2. If it is worn on the right hand, pointed towards you, it means you are in a relationship.

3. If it is worn on the left hand, pointed away, it means you are engaged to be married.

4. If it is worn on the left hard, pointed towards you, it means you are married.

In the last decade or so the Claddagh hands, heart and crown have been used as an Irish symbol in a lot of other contexts. The Claddagh Promise RIng is unmistakeable as an Irish symbol. Click here to read my full blog post on the subject.
