Meaning of the Celtic Warrior Shield Necklace

The Celtic Warrior Jewelry symbol is a Celtic cross. These cross symbols go way back in history. The earliest and simplest Celtic cross is just a simple cross with a circle. However, this might have been a variation of the Sun cross, which goes back to an even earlier era. It is clear that pagans used the cross as a symbol, and that it was converted as Christianity began to be introduced into Ireland. Once it was made into more of a Christian symbol, the lines of the cross extended beyond the circle, and the bottom line was made longer than the other, making it a lot more like a Christian cross. Over time, they began to add Celtic Knots and interlace to the crosses.

This piece is considered the “warrior” symbol because it is round and may have been used on Celtic Shields.

This round type of Celtic Cross is very similar to the cross that can be seen at the St. Brynach church yard in Wales. St. Brynach was a 6th centrury Welsh saint who spread Christianity and built a monastery. This round version with interwoven knots is is sometimes referred to as a “warrior cross”. It is also used on headstones and other religious settings.
