Meaning of the Bleeding Rose Shield
The rose is a famous symbol of love. Many believe this goes back to the Greek goddess Aphrodite. Depictions of Aphrodite often show her wearing a crown of roses, or roses near her wrist or feet.
Many people say that blood represents pain, therefore a bleeding rose would represent lost love, or unrequited love. That is not the meaning that I intended with this piece.
The Celtic Knot is a symbol of eternity, since it has no beginning or end. The rose surrounded by a Celtic knot would mean eternal love. Finally, the blood is meant to represent death, and convey the idea that love can live beyond death.
The bleeding rose is a common tattoo and is often surrounded by thorns or Celtic knots, similar to this piece.
